I'm a biologist and freelance science writer based in Oakland, California. I write about ecology and physiology, earth sciences and the environment for popular magazines, web sites, and leading scientific journals.

When not reporting, I edit books, magazine articles, scientific manuscripts, and other publications.

I started out as the science and health reporter for the Monterey Herald, a Knight-Ridder daily. Most recently, I was Managing Editor of California Wild, the venerable natural history magazine of the California Academy of Sciences.
