In 2008, when weblogs were still relatively new, I created the "On Research" blog at Ohio State University. Unusual among universities, it wasn't intended as a marketing ploy of the institution. I asked no permission beforehand; I just started blogging. What made this effort different was that blog postings were not intended to promote the university but rather they were meant to better describe the novelty of science and research and the people who did it. Much attention went to the junction of science and communication. Other postings were devoted to research issues. But all were intended to give readers a broader picture of what the world of science entailed. Before it ceased, we posted 83 offerings over four years. All of these were written by Earle Holland.
