Director, Research Communications (was Associate Executive Director, Office of University Communications) University Relations, Ohio State University. December 1990 to 2005. Responsible for primary university periodicals and national news services, research coverage as outlined below. Has functioned as senior public relations staffer for the university in the absence of the Executive Director of University Communications. Provides public relations counsel to university leadership in general areas of research, including research risks (i.e., lab animal usage, human subjects, radiation safety, biosafety, infection control, researcher conflicts-of-interest, fraud and misconduct in science, and computer security).

Director of Science Communications and Periodicals, Office of University Communications, Ohio State University. January, 1987 to December, 1990. Responsible for periodicals produced by the Office of University Communications at Ohio State. Included OSU Quest, a quarterly tabloid magapaper with a circulation of 130,000; OSU onCampus, the faculty-staff newspaper, published 22 times annually to a circulation of about 16,000; and Frontiers, the 70,000-circulation magazine covering cancer programs at Ohio State. Responsible for promoting university research throughout the university to both the public directly and through the news media. Serves as public relations/communications advisor/officer for major research programs on campus. Retained duties as Executive Editor of OSU Quest and University Research Editor.

Director of Periodicals, Office of University Communications, Ohio State University, July, 1984 to December, 1986. Responsible for periodicals produced by the Office of University Communications at Ohio State. That included OSU Quest, a quarterly tabloid magapaper with a circulation of 300,000; OSU onCampus, the faculty-staff newspaper, published 30 times annually to a circulation of about 16,000; and The Ohio State University Mirror, a quarterly tabloid newspaper intended for parents of OSU students, circulation is 40,000. Retained duties as Editor of OSU Quest, University Research Editor and Asst. Director, Office of Communications Services, as outlined below.

Assistant Director, Office of Communications Services, Office of University Communications and Development, Ohio State University, May 1979 to June, 1984. Responsible for all editorial newsfeatures produced by staff; production of two national news services; acts in the absence of the director; and editor of university periodical OSU Quest. Also functioned as senior science/medical writer for university. Continued to perform duties outlined in position below.

University Research Editor, Office of Public Affairs, and Assistant to the Dean of the Graduate School, Ohio State University, June 1978 to May 1979. Responsible for design and implementation of research information program aimed at explaining faculty research efforts to general public. Coverage includes entire university and national news media.

His efforts--to produce an hour-long television documentary on the Amazonian rain forest--were under the Departments of Zoology, Communication, Art Education and Photography & Cinema


Committee Appointments:

  • Served on campus Chemical Security Committee charged with maintaining the security of federally designated chemicals used on the university campus; role is chief spokesperson on this issue.
  • Served on permanent lab animal usage crisis committee charged with dealing with issues surrounding the use of laboratory animals in research. Served on committee from its inception 20 years ago.
  • Served on President's AAAS Fellows Committee, coordinating more than 150 faculty/staff who have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
  • Served on Search Committee for Vice President for Research. 2004.
  • Served on Ad Hoc Committee on Xenotransplantation. Committee formed by Vice President for Research and charged with recommending university policy governing future Ohio State research involving xenotransplantation. Appointed Spring, 1999.
  • Served on OSU Year 2000 Task Force. Task force formed by the Executive Vice President and Provost and charged with establishing materials and guidelines for insuring Y2K compliance, working with computer network support people campus-wide, and preparing contingency plans. National Science Foundation Peer Review Activity:

Served as reviewer for $2+ million proposal to NSFs Informal Science Education program to create television/video news service to provide science news content to local television news stations and to Hispanic stations. Winter, 1999.

 

National Institutes of Health Site Review Activity:

Served as reviewer for NIH Site Review for Center on Specific Language Impairment grant application proposed by the University of Kansas. Spring, 1991.

 

Science Education Activities:

Served as co-chair of the Public Awareness Subcommittee for "Prologue to Action: Life Sciences Education and Science Literacy," a national conference sponsored by the U.S. Public Health Service in June, 1991. The goal of the conference was to provide guidance and suggestions as to what role the PHS should play in becoming a leader in public science education and literacy for the next decade. My subcommittee produced recommendations for PHS pertaining to the public information/science communications roles and responsibilities the federal agency should follow

  • Wrote a regular science/medicine column for Sunday edition of the Columbus Dispatch carried weekly in the paper's "Discovery", now "Insight," section for more than 14 years (more than 500 columns).
