HENRY LANSFORD
Writing and Consulting
I am a writer, editor and communication consultant. As a writer, I focus primarily on science, technology, and the environment. In my editing work, I specialize in integrating diverse scientific and technical material written by different individuals or groups into unified documents with consistent style, format and level of complexity and detail. In my consulting work, I help my clients communicate effectively about scientific issues and accomplishments with policy-makers, private-sector decision-makers, the news media, the public, and other audiences.
I'm based in Boulder, Colorado, where I have lived and worked since 1965. Boulder is an international focal point for environmental research. It's the home of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Boulder Laboratories of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a diverse mix of other research institutions and high-tech industry, and three Nobel laureates. The main campus of the University of Colorado is here, with a good library that's open to every citizen of the state, and Colorado State University is an hour away in Fort Collins. Denver International Airport is handy when writing assignments or consulting jobs take me out of town or out of the country. And Boulder is a beautiful and exciting place to live.
My consulting includes:
I do most of my consulting work as an independent contractor. I also have worked as a senior communication consultant with RAND Environment (the RAND Environmental Science & Policy Center), formerly Science & Policy Associates, Inc. RAND is a nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis.
Most of my clients have been scientific institutions, nonprofit organizations or government agencies. They have included the Air Line Pilots Association, the American Meteorological Society, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Institute for Naval Oceanography, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Western Governors' Association and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research.
I'm currently (since January 2004) working as an editorial consultant to the National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry (NCSSF) in Washington, DC.
My science writing includes freelance articles on global climate change, acid precipitation, wind shear, ecosystem management and other scientific subjects in publications ranging from newspapers and airline in-flight magazines to Smithsonian, Air & Space, Natural History, Science, Nature and The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. I wrote The Climate Mandate, a book on climate, population and food, with Walter Orr Roberts, founding director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
My employment history includes full-time and part-time positions with government, academic, non-profit and for-profit organizations in various areas of communication, including writing, editing, public information and publications production.
My education includes a B.A. from Tulane University and an M.A. from the University of Southern Mississippi, both with an English major and a history minor. My master's thesis, The Clash of Emotions, reviewed and analyzed irony in William Faulkner's writing.
