About me: I am a freelance science writer and the mathematics correspondent for Science News magazine. I have written for Nature, New Scientist, American Scientist, The Sciences, The Klarreich Occasionally and other publications. I live in Berkeley, California. A detailed list of my articles is available on my publications page. Many of my stories are available online only to magazine subscribers. If you are trying to get hold of an article that is not freely available online, contact me. From February to September 2002, I was Journalist in Residence at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. Before that, I spent six months in London as a reporter for Nature. I am a graduate of the science writing program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Before becoming a science writer, I was a mathematician. I have a Ph.D. in mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and I was a professor at the University of Michigan for three years.
