DIANA STEELE NAMED DEPUTY EDITOR

Diana Steele

Diana Steele has been named deputy editor of ScienceWriters. A San Diego-based freelance science writer and a member of NASW since 1991, Steele writes about physics and neuroscience for the Dallas Morning News and Discover magazine.

She holds a master's degree in chemistry from John's Hopkins University, and discovered science writing in 1991 under the tutelage of Barbara Culliton, then deputy editor of Nature. After a AAAS Mass Media Fellowship at Colorado radio station KUNC and a year of freelancing for print and radio in D.C., Steele secured a job in science writing at the University of Chicago in 1993.

While at Chicago, she traveled to Antarctica as a National Science Foundation media fellow in 1995.

Steele returned to freelancing full time in 1998 and moved to San Diego in 2000. During this past summer, she served as interim director of communications for the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego.

When she's not swimming or complaining about the perfect San Diego weather, Steele can be reached at dsteele@nasw.org or 619-692-3534, or on the Web at www.dianasteele.com.
Steele replaces Bob Finn, who served as deputy editor for the past year. Finn stepped down from SW, and away from freelancing, when he accepted the position of San Francisco Bureau Chief for the International Medical News Group. Finn continues as a SW columnist and with his duties as NASW Cybrarian. Thank you, Bob, for your hard work, attention to detail, and continued dedication to SW and NASW.
