Allan C. Fisher


Allan C. Fisher, jr. died August 12, 1995, in Kilmarnock, VA, at the age of 76. He had been an NASW member since 1957. Upon graduation from University of Maryland in 1941, he worked as a reporter, successively, for The Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, and the New York City bureau of the Associated Press. After three years in public relations in Houston and Baltimore, he joined the staff of The National Geographic in 1950, rising to the position of senior assistant editor in charge of articles. Many of his readers came to know him through the 1973 publication of his Geographic book, America's Inland Waterway: Exploring the Atlantic Seaboard, which documented journeys aboard his 43-foot motor-sailer, Andromeda.

After retiring from the Geographic in 1981, he researched and wrote scripts as vice president of Mattingly Productions in Fairfax, VA. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Alice Michael Fisher, two daughters and a granddaughter.
