HERBERT A. SHAW

Herbert A. Shaw, a member of the National Association of Science Writers since 1954, died August 6 in Prospect Harbor, Maine. He had retired in 1976 from Harvard University as director of medical information, having served in that capacity since 1956 and as a science writer for the university news office since 1953. Earlier, he had been science editor of the Dayton (OH) Daily News for 17 years. He was a graduate of Ohio State University.

CAROLINE DOPYERA

Caroline Dopyera, science writer for the News & Observer (Raleigh, NC), died in September after a year-long battle with ovarian cancer. She was 32.

Born and reared in Syracuse, N.Y., Dopyera was working on a master's degree in paleobiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill when she was awarded a Mass Media Science and Engineering fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1993. Following her fellowship at the N&O, she was hired as its full-time science writer. Dopyera was a co-organizer of the North Carolina local chapter of NASW, SW@NC, and was an active participant in its activities. Trish Wilson, her editor at the N&O, described her as a "fabulous writer, just a true, natural talent."

ALFRED F. ZOBEL

Alfred F. Zobel, an NASW member since 1968, died in November 1995, according to a recent message from his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth M. Zobel, in Nutley, NJ. Zobel was a freelance writer and a columnist for American Druggist.

JOHN T. SUCHY

John T. Suchy, a member of NASW since 1962, died recently, according to a message from his daughter.
