After five years as a correspondent for New Scientist, Bob Holmes is now a features editor for the magazine, covering cell and molecular biology, biotech, ecology, conservation biology, and agriculture. He'll continue to work from his home in Santa Cruz, CA.
Lois Gaeta received the President's Award from the American Medical Writers Association. The award is presented to an AMWA member who has given at least 10 years of service at the chapter or national level, or both.
Julie Ann Miller, editor of Science News, and Boyce Rensberger, director of the Knight Fellowships Program at MIT, have been named Fellows of AAAS in recognition of their contributions to science communication, and will be honored at the annual meeting in February 2000 in Washington, DC.
NPR science correspondent Richard Harris has received the 1999 American Medical Writers Association's Walter C. Alvarez award. The award is presented to a member or non-member of AMWA to honor excellence in communicating health care developments and concepts to the public.
Shauna Roberts, a freelance in New Orleans, has received two awards for her book The Commonsense Guide to Weight Loss for People with Diabetes (co-authored with Barbara Hansen): honorable mention in the Trade category in the American Medical Writers Association's 1999 Medical Book Awards Competition and a bronze award in the 1999 National Health Information Awards competition.

Writer and media producer Vic Banks' one-hour film, "The Pantanel: Brazil's Forgotten Wilderness," has garnered a number of awards including: (finalist) Wildscreen film festival; best of category International Wildlife Film Festival; (finalist) Earthvision film festival; and is nominated for a documentary Emmy Award. The Pantanel is the world's largest wetland, covering an area the size of England and Wales combined. Banks recently sold broadcast right for the film to National Geographic Channels and Discovery Channel Latin America.
After a six-month stint covering breaking medical news for Medcast/WebMD, Ruth Papazian has joined the staff of APBnews.com as editor of the newly launched Safety channel.
