NASW OFFERS FALL WORKSHOP IN TENNESSEEOn Sat., Oct. 25, NASW will offer a Fall Professional Workshop. This is a first-of-its kind effort at outreach to regional science writers and will be held the day before the CASW New Horizons Briefing (Oct. 26-29), in Knoxville, Tenn. The workshop theme is “Risk and Crisis: From Clinical Trials to Environmental Dangers.” It’s a half-day program that starts with lunch and a plenary talk on investigative reporting by freelance writer Shannon Brownlee, a 2003 NASW Science-in-Society Award winner. The afternoon features panels on communicating risk and handling an institutional crisis. Confirmed speakers include David Ropeik, co-author of "Risk: A Practical Guide for Deciding What’s Really Safe and What’s Really Dangerous in the World Around You;” Robert Park, author of "Voodoo Science;” Chris Russell, freelance and Washington Post health correspondent; and Joann Rodgers, Johns Hopkins Medical Institution.
