Edwin Diamond, a member of NASW for many years as science editor of Newsweek magazine, died July 10 at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. He was 72. His Newsweek colleagues published the following tribute: There was a death in Newsweeks extended family last week. Edwin Diamond, a writer and Senior Editor from 1958 to 1970, died of heart failure at the age of 72. A specialist in science, Diamond guided the magazines coverage of the U.S. space program while editing medicine, religion, and other back of the book departments. He also found, fostered, and profusely edited a whole stable of Newsweek writers, encouraging female staffers long before the womens movement. He never lost his own voice. Diamond wrote 11 books and, after leaving the magazine, morphed into a discerning media critic and lively professor of journalism. His energy was boundless, his work passionate and distinguished.
