They will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue rosette pin on Sat., Feb. 15 at the Fellows Forum during the 2003 AAAS Annual Meeting in Denver. She has also co-organized a number of sessions on science communications for scientists and journalists at AAAS meetings. Lewenstein is associate professor of science communication at Cornell University and editor of Public Understanding of Science. A member of the AAAS Section on History and Philosophy of Science, he was cited for “distinguished scholarly and professional contributions to science and technology studies, particularly for contributions to the public understanding of science and technology.” Lewenstein is a historian of science focusing on people and institutions involved in public communication of science and technology. He was a co-author of The Establishment of American Science: 150 Years of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1999) and the editor of When Science Meets the Public (published by AAAS in 1992). He has also been a consultant and evaluator for a number of AAAS educational outreach projects and has organized a number of sessions on public understanding of science at AAAS meetings over the years. Friedmann and Lewenstein join a growing list of NASW members who have been elected AAAS Fellows. They include: Robert Cowen, Sharon Dunwoody, Odom Fanning, Sharon Friedman, Barbara Gastel, Brian Hayes, Julie Ann Miller, Earle Holland, Gerard Piel, Joann Rodgers, Carol Rogers, Joann Myer Valenti, and Joan Wilentz.
