HISTORY OF SCIENCE IS FOCUS OF DIBNER INSTITUTE FELLOWSHIP

The Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology, located on the MIT campus, invites applications for its first Science Writing Fellowship position for the academic year 2004-2005. This is an opportunity for a senior science writer (staff or freelance) with a proven track record of writing and/or reporting for a general audience to pursue a substantial project of his/her choosing that bears on the history of science or technology. In judging applications, the primary criterion will be the significance of the project.

In addition to his/her project, the Science Writing Fellow will have the opportunity to interact and compare perspectives with the other Dibner Fellows and the community of scholars in history of science and technology in the Boston/Cambridge area as well as to participate with faculty, students and fellows in the Graduate Program in Science Writing and the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship Program, both at MIT.

Founded in 1992, the Dibner Institute’s primary mission is to support advanced research in the history of science and technology, across a wide variety of areas and a broad spectrum of topics and methodologies. Fellowships provide a stipend of $35,000 with added expenses negotiable, office space, library privileges, and support facilities. For further information, visit the Dibner Institute Web site at dibinst.mit.edu.

All Dibner Institute Fellowships represent a full-time commitment. Fellows are expected to reside in the Cambridge/Boston area during the terms of their grants, to participate in the activities of the Dibner Institute community, and to present their work once during their fellowship appointments. Applications for the Science Writing Fellowship should include: a cover letter, a resume, a two-page project description, two letters of recommendation sent directly to the Dibner Institute, and an example or two of your writing. Due by March 1, 2004, applications should be sent to Trudy Kontoff, Fellowship Coordinator, Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology, MIT E56-100, 38 Memorial Drive. Cambridge, MA 02139.
