NASW MEMBER LEADS WORLD’S LARGEST SCIENTIFIC SOCIETYThe American Chemical Society (ACS) has named Madeleine Jacobs its executive director and CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2004. Prior to her selection, Jacobs served as editor in chief of the weekly ACS newsmagazine Chemical & Engineering News. ACS is the world’s largest scientific society with a membership of more than 160,000 chemists and chemical engineers and a staff of 1,900. Jacobs was selected from a pool of 250 applicants following a year-long search. A chemist and science journalist, Jacobs has been an NASW member since 1973. Recently awarded an honorary doctorate of science from George Washington University, Jacobs has received dozens of other honors and awards in her career as a writer, editor, innovator, and motivator of young people, including the ACS Award for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences and the New York Academy of Sciences Women’s History Month Award. She is a sought-after public speaker on topics ranging from gender and ethnic equity in science to the challenges facing chemists in a global environment. In 1993, Jacobs was named managing editor for Chemical & Engineering News. In 1995, she became editor in chief. Before that, she spent 14 years with the Smithsonian Institution where she launched the nationally syndicated Smithsonian News Service, managed publication operations for several periodicals, and in 1986 became director of public affairs. In that role, she served as principal spokesperson and public affairs strategist for the entire Smithsonian Institution. Earlier in her career, she held a similar position at the National Bureau of Standards (now the National Institute of Standards and Technology).
