EVERT CLARK AWARD TO RICHARD STONE

NASW member Richard Stone received the Evert Clark Award for an article in Discover magazine, "Analysis of a Toxic Death," exploring the story of a woman whose body may--or may not--have emitted toxic fumes in a California emergency room. The $1000 award is presented each year to science writers aged thirty or younger.

An honorable mention went to NASW member W. Wayt Gibbs for two articles in Scientific American, where Gibbs is on the editorial board. The two stories--"Seeking the Criminal Element" and "Lost Science in the Third World"--were cited by the judges for their "exhaustive treatment of controversial and unusual topics."

Judges for the 1995 award were John Schwartz of the Washington Post; Joannie Schrof of U.S. News and World Report; Robert Park, a physicist at the University of Maryland; Susan Milius, a UPI science writer; and Ken Jacobson, editor of New Technology Week.
