Writing

                       Environmental/Science writer  The Burlington Free Press (1986-1988; 1991-June 2002) Wrote news and feature articles and a biweekly nature column for Vermont's largest newspaper.

Editorial writer, acting editorial page editor  The Burlington Free Press (1990-1991; summer 2002) Wrote editorials and served as editor of the editorial page for six months.

Science writer intern  The Charlotte Observer (summer 1986) Wrote news and feature science articles as an American Association for the Advancement of Science Mass Media Fellow.

Freelance writer (ongoing) Co-authored a Vermont natural history guide, "The Longstreet Highroad Guide to the Vermont Mountains" (April, 1999, Longstreet Press, Atlanta, GA, 338 pp.); author of feature-length magazine articles (Sea Kayaker, AMC Outdoors, Northern Woodlands).

Lecturer, University of Vermont (1990-1995) Taught graduate environmental writing program.

Lecturer, Trinity College (1990-1995) Co-taught undergraduate natural history field course.

Education Coordinator, Appalachian Mountain Club (1980-1984) Organized and taught outdoor skills and natural history workshops for adults and school children.

President and Chairwoman,  Richmond Free Library Development, Inc.; Richmond Free Library Board of Trustees (2000-2002) Volunteer director of a $450,000 capital campaign to expand my home town's public library.

Executive Assistant to the Secretary  State of Vermont Natural Resources Agency  (1988-1990) Environmental policy analyst for the chief of Vermont's Natural Resources Agency and the governor of Vermont.

 

Research

Graduate research assistant  University of Vermont  (1984-1986) Assisted with a variety of field research topics in Alaska, Costa Rica, Haiti and Venezuela.

Undergraduate research hydrologist  University of Turku, Kevo Subarctic Research Institute, Finland (summer, 1979) Research focused on physical and chemical hydrology of small streams in Utsjoki area.

Undergraduate research assistant  McGill University, McGill Subarctic Research Lab (summer 1977-1978) Member of research team that studied permafrost hydrology, mapped soils, and conducted hydrologic monitoring of selected rivers.

AAAS/Westinghouse Science Journalism Award (1993) First place, competition sponsored by largest professional scientific organization in the US.
