SWINY EVENT

Swiny Cruise on the Clearwater

vast ye swabbies!

Join Science Writers in New York for mid-summer's cruise on the Hudson River sloop Clearwater and learn more about the human and natural wonder that is the Hudson River estuary.

We'll be leaving, er, shoving off from the 79th Street Pier on Tuesday, June 22, at 6:00 p.m. for (sing it with us) a three-hour tour of the lower estuary and upper harbor. Accompanying us will be an as-yet-undetermined scientist from one of the nearby institutions conducting research in the harbor ecosystem, who can interpret what we see.

This is a special advance notice of the trip! In one week, if we don't fill all 50 places, we will open up registration to other journalist and writing organizations. SO ACT NOW, unless you want to share the boat with a bunch of boring, non-sciency people! And start practicing your sea chanties--or is that shanties. We can never remember.

Space is strictly limited to 50 people. Cost is $38 per person and receipt of payment constitutes official registration, and yes we will be checking postmarks to decide who got their checks in the mail first. As always, guests are welcome.

Excited?
You bet. Be there.

This is an update to last week's notice about the 6/22 trip with SWINY on the Hudson River sloop Clearwater.
ccompanying us on the Clearwater will be Frank Nitsche, an associate research scientist at Columbia's
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Frank is currently working on a project to map the bottom of the harbor and lower estuary in order to better understand how the Hudson's very dynamic sedimentation processes work.
He'll bring along some new sonar images of the harbor bottom and tell us a little about how the river changes on a daily basis and about some of the surprises that lurk beneath the waves. More about Hudson River research at Lamont is available here: http://www.hudson.columbia.edu/ People wishing to pay with a credit card can do so through PayPal, for which they need to register at www.paypal.com
Then, just click on the text below

(The payment goes to Insight Communications Inc.,  SWINY Board member Alan Brown's account. Alan will inform Ken Kostel about registrants and give Ken the SWINY money in the Insight account.)
