Neural Stem Cells and the Treatment of Neurological Disease

Researchers have long imagined treating human diseases by replacing damaged cells with stem cells--embryonic cells from which other cells develop. The approach raises both ethical and technical questions: where do you get the cells? How do you manipulate them into becoming the right sort of adult cell?

On Thursday, October 21, Dr. Viviane Tabar, of the NIH and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, will explain how she and her colleagues raised neural stem cells in the laboratory and used them to treat neurological disease in an animal model. The report of the research, which appeared in last year's Nature Neuroscience, is among the journal's 10 most-cited papers.

The evening begins at 6:30 PM with light supper and drinks.
Dr. Tabar's talk begins at 7:30 PM
