Nature America (the U.S. subsidiary of Nature in London) will

present an afternoon talk by NIH Director Harold Varmus at

3:30 p.m. on August 4, 1999 at their New York office (345 Park

Avenue South, 10th floor, between 25th & 26th Streets).

Dr. Varmus will talk about the NIH in general, its current

role, and future aspirations, as well the recent E-Biomed

proposal, in addition to how he sees the dissemination of the

results of basic research and the pursuit of new scientific

knowledge changing in the future.

The event will begin at about 3:30 p.m. with a talk of about

45 minutes followed by a question and answer session after

which cheese and wine would be served.

All SWINY members are invited to attend; however, Richard

Nathan, who is coordinating the meeting, has asked us to

emphasize that these meetings are meant to be strictly off the
