James M. Watson went grocery shopping Thursday evening. The trouble is, he never left work.
Watson, 18, of 1611 Highridge Circle was arrested on suspicion of larceny after he attempted to take a large amount of food from the larder at Boone Tavern & Restaurant, where he was an employee.
Officers on bike patrol downtown questioned Watson when they observed him loading several boxes into a car in the alley behind the restaurant, said Columbia police Capt. Doug Schwandt.
Police said what Watson was in the process of loading into his car could have fed quite a few people. Included in the haul were 80 ounces of shrimp, a box of frozen hamburger patties, 24 6-ounce chicken breasts, two ribeye steaks, three filet mignons and three pork chops, police said. The goods totaled $113.
The "evidence" is not being kept in a refrigerator at police headquaters, however. Schwandt said that in cases where evidence is perishable, the police usually take pictures and then return the goods to the owner.
So the next time you're in Boone Tavern and the server asks what you'll be having, maybe you should say "I'll have an 'Exhibit A', lightly grilled, and a nice glass of chardonnay."
Bon appetit.
