Editorials I've written

I was editorial writer at The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press from Feb., 1990 to Oct. 1992, including a three-month stint as acting editorial page editor. I served again as acting editorial page editor from June 2001 to Sept. 2001. Writing editorials is unlike any other kind of writing: you're limited in format and size based on the layout of your editorial page, and, you're guaranteed to spend at least half of your day on the phone talking to people who loved or hated the piece you've written. I've only got a few copies of edits written from my last stint on the page. My first go-round pre-dates the Free Press's electronic archive.

"Driving out dealers: Vermont is within an easy drive of major urban areas with ready sources of heroin and other drugs. That makes stopping the flow of drugs a Herculean task but only part of the solution," The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, Aug. 22, 2001 full article

"Nine days of hell: If judges are ordering methadone treatment, some parolees will end up in jail. The state must have a plan to treat these addicts ," The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, July 8, 2001 full article

"Turning the volume down: Burlington police are right to crack down on noise complaints. Not that there's anything criminal about listening to thud music; it's just the volume," The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, June 27, 2001 full article

"The OxyContin dilemma: A drug's dangers justify unusual controls," The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, Aug. 10, 2001 full article
