TELSTRA CORP LTD Sydney, Australia

Hired as a consultant to Australia's largest telco, was tasked with overhauling the company's wireless multimedia business and developing its mobiles content strategy.

  • Devised Telstra's Wireless Content Strategy 2004-06, introducing a range of innovations, including a devising powerful new user interface and new commercial models; identified new business opportunities in wireless advertising and sponsored content; outlined methods for converting the wireless medium into paid 'real estate'
  • Revamped the Wireless Content department, hiring new staff, reorganising functions and applying media models to the direction and execution of the business
  • Drove sales of mobile content downloads 86% higher year-on-year within 4 months, achieving record volumes and revenues (without promotion or advertising support)
  • Mobile internet WAP usage for newly-launched content services rose 372% year-on-year, surpassing previous peaks (eg. Telstra-sponsored 2003 Rugby World Cup)
  • Labour costs reduced by $150,000 gross on an annualised basis; savings also found in a range of content deals that were renegotiated
  • Redeveloped online sales channels to boost customer discovery of content products
  • Was responsible for 4,000 content products generating A$60 million in annual revenue; supervised staff of five in Melbourne and Sydney, managed cost and revenue budgets

ABC ONLINE Sydney, Australia

  • Redesigned ABC Online's science and technology news site, revamping coverage, retraining staff and setting new editorial standards and approach.
  • Drove average online traffic 290% higher within six months (to its highest on record), and attained all-time audience peaks 620% above the weekly average
  • Developed a 19,000-word style guide for ABC Online, plus a new editor's manual
  • Ran Australia's only daily science news service, with two staff and a handful of freelancers.

AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHIC PTY LTD Sydney, Australia

Newton magazine

Hired as a consultant to develop Japan's Newton Magazine for an Australian market, I took it from concept stage to a marketable product: was appointed Managing Editor after 1st issue.

  • Drove Newton to become the biggest-selling science magazine in Australian publishing history, with an audited circulation of 41,000 (surpassing Rolling Stone); this is despite a high cover price of $12.95 and modest marketing spend
  • Responsible for this $2.7 million business, reporting directly to the Managing Director of Australian Geographic Pty Ltd; managed budgets, authorised expenditure, supervised an editorial staff of five and two external graphic designers
  • Set editorial direction, tone and approach; directed the commissioning of articles, photography and illustrations; contributed to marketing, distribution and circulation strategies; and promoted the title with regular appearances on radio and television.

ABC TELEVISION Sydney, Australia

  • Researched, wrote, narrated and presented TV stories for the weekly science program, Quantum; directed camera crews, managed field trips, supervised editing and graphics.

FILM AUSTRALIA LTD Sydney, Australia

  • As an independent producer, secured financing from Film Australia and SBS Independent to shoot The Diplomat, a documentary centred on East Timor's Nobel Peace laureate José Ramos Horta. Arranged and conducted interviews, negotiated access, provided translations and research, wrote scripts
  • Filmed over two years, the documentary premiered at the Sydney Film Festival in July 2000 and has screened at 26 other festivals, including Berlin, London, New York, Prague, San Francisco, Singapore and Vancouver. It has won six national and international film awards.

  • As the Sydney Correspondent for the London-based weekly science magazine, New Scientist, I researched and wrote news and features for an international audience
  • During this time I was also a regular contributor to: The Financial Review Magazine, The Sunday Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Science Spectra, The South China Morning Post, The Age, ABC Radio 2BL (Sydney) and Radio 3LO (Melbourne).

  • As a technology journalist for The Age, I researched and wrote news and features for the weekly IT section (these also appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald)

  • As Managing Editor of the futurist title 21C and the scholarly digest Science Spectra, I was responsible for the editorial, design and production of these lavish quarterly magazines
  • Relaunched under my guidance, 21C's total paid circulation rose 47%; my first issue as editor won a Daley Award for Science Journalism, and my second a Folio Award for design. Also developed 21C Online, only the second Australian magazine to launch on the web.

  • As a Foreign Correspondent for this London-based international newswire, I reported news for a global audience, covering national politics, equities, forex, diplomacy, science and technology
  • Highlights include Non-Aligned Summit in Jakarta, U.S. & Pacific Nations Summit in Honolulu, East Timor talks at the U.N. in New York, Canada's Dublin royal commission into drugs in Olympic sport, and working at the parliamentary press galleries in Canberra and Ottawa
