Lodging and Transportation

Make your travel arrangements early. If you're traveling from outside the Bay Area and will be staying overnight, we suggest you consider arranging lodging in Berkeley during the NASW Workshops. We've set aside a block of hotel rooms at the Hotel Durant, adjacent to the UC Berkeley campus and just a few minutes walk from the conference site. For reservations, call 800-238-7268, and mention that you're attending the NASW conference. These rooms are held for conference participants only through November 15, 2000!

If you'd rather stay in San Francisco for the duration, you'll need to arrange transportation across the Bay. On the SF end, the Hilton is a couple-block walk from the Powell Street station in San Francisco. The BART ride to Berkeley is estimated at about 25 minutes. Upon arrival in Berkeley, one can arrange a taxicab or use the Berkeley campus shuttle (25 cents) to Clark Kerr Campus of UC Berkeley, site of the NASW Workshops.

Transportation from San Francisco and Oakland airports to Clark Kerr is offered by BayPorter Express, 415-467-1800. The campus is approximately 55 minutes from San Francisco International Airport and 30 minutes from Oakland International Airport. Cost is currently $19 and reservations must be made in advance.

Limited parking will be available at the Clark Kerr center for an $8 daily fee. We recommend walking (if you're staying at the Durant), carpooling or taking public transportation.

A Bay Area member has this to say about getting around:

"People relying on public transit will soon be in lousy moods if they try to get to the NASW workshops from the SF AAAS hotels, or to attend AAAS from the Durant or other Berkeley hotels. You can do it. You just can't do it fast.

"The best idea, if you have no car or friend willing to drive you around and if you plan to attend both days of workshops, may be to stay at a Berkeley hotel initially, and after the workshops transfer to a SF hotel. People doing just one day at the workshops may find the one-time transit hassle easier than switching hotels, although rates are lower in Berkeley."
