Over $11,000 has been awarded to ten recipients in the most recent round of Career Grants offered by the National Association of Science Writers. Open to all established science writers, whether freelancers or employees of publications, universities, or other organizations, the Career Grants award up to $2,500 for projects that aim to increase the overall scope of the person's career opportunities. Through periodic offers since 2009, $100,000 in Career Grant funds have been distributed to help established science writers advance their careers.
Congratulations to the recipients of our fifth round of awards:
- Jennifer Abbasi: $497 for Bootcamp Digital social media certification
- Chris Berdik: $1,350 to participate in Boston University’s “Storytelling with Data” workshop
- Mollie Bloudoff-Indelicato: $1,150 to complete Spanish language classes for covering Latin American science
- Anne Bolen: $500 to complete online courses for video editing and digital photography
- Katie Burke: $735 to purchase podcasting equipment
- Melinda Carter: $1,429 to attend the AMWA meeting and complete four medical science courses
- Alison Fromme: $1,910 to participate in Iowa Summer Writing Festival
- Esther Landhuis: $275 to participate in the Berkeley Narrative Journalism Conference
- Kathleen Raven: $2,048 to participate in Boston University’s “Storytelling with Data” workshop
- Andreas von Bubnoff: $1,900 to participate in Boston University’s “Storytelling with Data” workshop
