Freelance rates-and-terms database launched

The NASW Freelance Committee is proud to announce the launch of the NASW Rates-and-Terms Database. The database is for all NASW members (join here) who freelance or would like to. It allows NASW members to anonymously exchange information about the freelance science writing market.

As the database grows, it will provide practical and up-to-date information on what kinds of freelance science writing jobs exist, as well as pay rates and contract terms.

You can search the database, by publication, type of client, type of work, medium (e.g., print or radio), and target audience. Or you can browse the entire database.

Most importantly, you can contribute your own experiences! Please contribute early and often — we all need to share our experiences to make the database a success. Get started here.

Name the Database Contest!

The new NASW market database is coming into the world without a name. We need your help to give it one! In China, where babies don't get names for a full month after they are born, the grandparents or a fortune teller name the baby at a special naming ceremony.

The NASW freelance committee has decided to try something similar, but with a good ol' American twist: Instead of a naming ceremony, we're having a Naming Contest, and we're accepting entries for the next month. The winner will get a free one-year NASW membership and, of course, thanks all around.

The contest is open to all NASW members.
