The 5th World Conference of Science Journalists is awarding up to ten travel scholarships to early to mid career US and Canadian science journalists on behalf of the Government of Victoria.
Each scholarship is for $A2,000 (about $US 1,600).
The scholarships will be awarded in consultation with the National Association of Science Writers and the Canadian and Quebec Science Writers Associations.
Applications close on Wednesday, March 7.
The scholarship will be paid to the successful scholars once they have provided evidence that they have booked their travel.
Alternatively we can book the travel on the scholars' behalf.
A special discounted rate of $A385 will apply and will cover all conference events including sponsored breakfasts, lunches, and social events.
The scholar will be responsible for paying the registration fee, for accommodation and for all other expenses. Conference accommodation prices start from $A110 (tax inclusive).
Please email your application to niall@scienceinmelbourne2007.org with the words 'US Scholarship application' in the subject line.
We will only consider applications from working science journalists — that is people who are paid by the media to report on science (including medical, environmental, and agricultural science issues).
Information officers and others who are paid by science and government organizations to write about their science are invited to participate in the conference but are not eligible for scholarships.
Please note. If you are successful in your application, you will need to organize a visa for your visit to Australia.
If you have any questions about this application process, please contact Sarah Brooker, the Executive Officer of the conference on sarah@scienceinmelbourne2007.org or phone +61 3 9397 3980.
An application form is online at www.scienceinmelbourne2007.org. Please fill out this form and email it to niall@scienceinmelbourne2007.org, along with selected examples of your published work.
