Congratulations to Jennifer Huber, winner of the 2024 NASW Diane McGurgan Service Award

This year, the National Association of Science Writers awarded its annual Diane McGurgan Service Award to NASW member Jennifer Huber. NASW president Sandeep Ravindran announced the honors at the annual NASW Membership Meeting, held online on Nov. 20

From among more than 200 active NASW volunteers, Huber was recognized by the NASW Board of Directors for her sustained and tireless support of Freelance Committee virtual events and other community-bonding resources.

Since 2022, Huber has been instrumental in co-leading NASW Virtual Business Chats, Virtual Skills Chats, and Virtual Networking Socials. As a result of Huber's volunteer spirit, NASW members have benefited greatly from these curated talks, where speakers share advice on running their writing business, trying out new productivity tools, and discuss self-care strategies — and NASW as a whole has rapidly grown its Media Archive of on-demand professional development videos.

Ravindran's remarks in commending Jennifer Huber:

"After organizing a session for the ScienceWriters2020 virtual meeting with Rina Shaikh-Lesko, Jennifer told Tinsley that it would be great to have a series of virtual talks throughout the year for freelancers. In 2022, she and Ellen Kuwana proposed a series as part of the Freelance Committee that you've just heard about. And over the past few years, Jennifer has helped organize more than 20 virtual networking chats and socials which have been a huge benefit — not just to freelancers, but to NASW members overall."

"I also wanted to add, it's not just what she's done, but how she does it. In addition to being a pleasure to work with, if Jennifer says that she will do something, it gets done on time, and with exceptional attention to detail. So, congratulations Jennifer — and thank you for everything you do for NASW. Let's have a huge round of applause for Jennifer!"

Thank you, Jennifer, for your commitment to NASW by curating these helpful spaces for learning, networking, and growing for our member community!

The NASW Diane McGurgan Volunteer Service Award was established in 2001. NASW member Louis Lerner, who passed away in 2006, wished to show appreciation for then-Executive Director Diane McGurgan and other members whose efforts on behalf of NASW go beyond the call of duty. With more than 200 active volunteers annually, NASW relies on the energy and enthusiasm of members to help shape programming, lead or contribute to projects and programs, or run for the board.
