Virtual NASW student programs during AAAS 2022 annual meeting

The National Association of Science Writers (NASW) is sponsoring two virtual programming options for students to coincide with the virtual AAAS 2022 annual meeting. If you're a student interested in science writing, an NASW member who would like to volunteer as a mentor or an editor looking to recruit motivated interns, please read on for how you can join us.

Important note for students: To participate, students must be current members of NASW OR submit a membership application by Feb. 1, 2022. Tip: Signing up to view free content as a guest on nasw.org is not the same as joining NASW. Please double-check that you are a member before the event dates.

Mentoring Program: NASW will again sponsor a virtual mentoring program during AAAS 2022, pairing graduate and undergraduate students with working journalists, public information officers and other science writers and communicators interested in similar beats. Students will have the option of writing a news article based on a AAAS session of their choice, and mentors will serve as editors. Satisfactorily completed stories will be published in the NASW Student Newsroom. To be eligible, student participants must join NASW by Feb. 1, 2022. Mentors and mentees will meet their match when they log into the Remo virtual conference room. Platform access information will be provided to registered participants via email ahead of the meet up.

Students who would like to have a mentor may sign up here.

Mentor/editor volunteers may sign up here.

Find your mentor/editor and mentee match and table assignment for the Remo virtual platform here. Please make note of your floor and table number.

Internship Fair and Editor Meet & Greet: Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to meet with editors from top magazines, research institutes, national labs and other science communication outlets during a speed-dating-style internship fair and meet & greet on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1-5 p.m. Eastern. Some editors will be available for general conversations, whereas others may recruit candidates for paid internships. Students must pre-register. Registrants will receive additional instructions via email prior to the fair. Remember, to participate in the fair, students must join NASW by Feb. 1. Your membership application need not be approved at the time you register for the fair, but your membership application should be submitted no later than February 1. Learn more about the internship fair here.

Editors: To take part in the internship fair/meet & greet, please send an email to fair coordinator Berly McCoy at kimberly.mccoy@westernalum.org. Let her know whether you are interested in recruiting students for internships or simply having conversations.

Travel Fellowship: We will not award travel fellowships this year, since the AAAS 2022 annual meeting is virtual.

See you in February!
