The NASW Freelance Committee virtual meetup on Sept. 5 will be a business chat on labor laws and how they impact solo businesses. To speak on the topic, volunteer event hosts Jennifer Huber and Ellen Kuwana have invited employment attorney Ryan Stygar.
"Attorney Ryan" will describe the basics, status and implications of federal labor laws that define independent contractor status, including the Department of Labor’s recent ruling on employee or independent contractor classification under the Fair Labor Standards Act and the potential Pro Act. He will also provide tips on how to remain a solo business within this labor law landscape, including how to navigate when organizations hire through third-party companies. This will be an informal presentation, with lots of time for questions and answers.
