Regional science writing groups

Although the National Association of Science Writers has no official local chapters or groups, we encourage the efforts of independently organized "regional groups" to bring like-minded colleagues together.

Regional groups vary in structure and organization: some exist as informal and semi-regular meetups, while others are full-fledged nonprofit organizations of their own. They each help populate our collective, wide-reaching professional community across the United States.

Over the years, regional groups have applied for and received NASW Idea Grants funding to launch specific initiatives, such as HBCU partnerships, career planning workshops, virtual speakers series, and the launch of a new regional group serving Florida and Puerto Rico.

Additionally, NASW provided space for the inaugural gathering of the Congress of Regional Science Writers Groups (#SciWriCongress), held during the ScienceWriters2018 annual conference in Washington, D.C., and subsequently at ScienceWriters2019 in State College and virtually in recent years. Currently led by volunteer Michael Newman of DCSWA and Jenny Cox of SCONC, the SciWriCongress connects leaders of various regional groups to share insights and coordinate shared events, and provides a Slack for group discussion. Interested NASW members can contact that network at sciwricongress@gmail.com.

Below are links to known active regional groups. If you are a group leader with updates, changes, or additions to this list, please email director@nasw.org and sciwricongress@gmail.com.
